ABOUT OUR CLASSES
Science
This year students will study life science. Major units include ecology, cells and the three domains of living things. As part of our study of the domains, we will be dissecting various representative organisms.
An emphasis will be placed on writing to express ideas. Expect to see two to four homework assignments per week and extensive use of the assignment book. There will also be labs on a regular basis.
Social Studies
In this course, the student will learn about the history and culture of some of the greatest ancient civilizations. Topics covered will include: Why Study History?, Early Man, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
Math
The content covered will include integers, rational numbers, expressions, equations and inequalities, ratios and proportional reasoning, percents, geometric figures, probability, and statistics. Concepts of algebra will be intertwined in lessons throughout the year.
A strong emphasis will be placed on problem-solving skills as well as how mathematics relates to the everyday lives of middle school students. Also, this course will prepare students for the study of higher mathematics.
English Language Arts
My name is Mrs. Connors, and I’d like to welcome you to Team Velocity and to our language arts class. We're going to have a great year exploring different aspects of reading, writing, speaking, and language skills. Love reading? I can't wait for you to see my book shelves! Hate reading? That's okay! I'll work with you and find a way to make it worth your time! We'll be writing all of the time, but don't worry, I'll help you each step of the way. We apply what we learn in class to our own writing pieces, and you'll always know ahead of time which skills are being assessed.
