An emphasis will be placed on writing to express ideas. Expect to see two to four homework assignments per week and extensive use of the assignment book. There will also be labs on a regular basis.

Social Studies

In this course, the student will learn about the history and culture of some of the greatest ancient civilizations. Topics covered will include: early man, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, medieval Europe and the Renaissance.

These cultures will be studied in an open-minded manner examining how ancient peoples’ contributions have shaped our modern way of life.

The content covered will include integers, rational numbers, expressions, equations and inequalities, ratios and proportional reasoning, percents, geometric figures, probability, and statistics. Concepts of algebra will be intertwined in lessons throughout the year.

A strong emphasis will be placed on problem-solving skills as well as how mathematics relates to the everyday lives of middle school students. Also, this course will prepare students for the study of higher mathematics.

English Language Arts

My name is Mrs. Connors, and I’d like to officially welcome you to Team Velocity and to our language arts class.  This will be an exciting class and we’re going to learn so much together.  And, as a result, you’re going to do very well.  As we work together this year, you’ll come to learn that I have high expectations for each and every one of my students.  I expect that you will be respectful and responsible and that you will work hard to learn, grow, and improve.  You can expect the same attributes from me.  As your teacher, it is my job to challenge you, to keep you safe, and to support you in a way that helps you find success.  I’m so glad you’ve joined our team, and I cannot wait to get to know all of you and to have some fun while we learn together!

Class Expectations:

Every day, I expect each student to arrive to class on time with his/her Chromebook, language arts binder, assignments, a pencil or pen, and a reading book.  We will use our Chromebooks regularly in class.

 Suggested Materials:

  • 1 inch, 3-ring binder with four dividers which will help you to stay organized as the year progresses.
  • Please label the dividers as Reading, Writing, Grammar/Vocab, and Graded.  Your dividers can be made of construction paper or you can use store bought dividers.
  • If you need ANY of these supplies let me know.  If you have a different organizational system that works for you, just let me take a peek at it so I can be sure you have what you need.

Assignment Expectations:

  • When it comes to any graded work, I will let you know the skills being assessed and how you are being assessed, so the expectations are always clear.
  • The due dates will be written in your agenda, and they will be posted on the Team’s homework page for each section.
  • The scores for assignments will be posted on Skyward as soon as possible.  Please be patient as I will always do my best to be sure your grades are accurately posted as soon as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How will my child know what assignments he or she has?

A: Students are required to use their assignment books. If there are blanks or the word "none" is written too often, emphasize to your child that you expect to see assignments written. A link has been provided on the team's website to a Google document.

Q: Are students allowed to eat snacks?

A: Yes. Velocity policy will be that students may eat healthy snacks at the beginning of period 3. This should not be messy, disruptive to the class, nor be shared. No candy!
