Overall Middle School Math Standards
Students will demonstrate problem solving skills as they:
- Utilize a variety of techniques
- Demonstrate appropriate mathematical operations
- Apply mathematical ideas to common and complex problems
- Use appropriate technology, i.e. calculators and computers
- Communicate the processes used to arrive at solutions
- Apply mathematical knowledge to real world situations
- Incorporate mental math and estimation skills
- Use math specific terminology and notation
- Reason mathematically
- Gain confidence in math ability
Number concepts and computational skills developed in the elementary and intermediate schools are reinforced and extended in grades 7 and 8. In addition, new concepts are developed at each grade level. Key focus topics for each grade are listed below:
- Grade 7: Expressions and equations, scientific calculator, statistics, Pythagorean theorem
- Grade 8: Data analysis, equations with rational numbers, Algebra
